Dalhart History

In the early 20th century, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway built a track crossing the Fort Worth and Denver City line. W. J. Blair and Charles W. Thornton platted the original settlement in 1901 when it was known as "Twist Junction". Later, the name was changed to "Denrock", but the postal authorities objected to this name. Since the community was located at the border of the Dallam and Hartley counties, it was christened "Dalhart". On May 6, 1902. it was incorporated as a town, and it became a city on April 6, 1904. The presence of two railroad lines led to the establishment of roundhouses, machine shops, and a lever control tower which contributed to the growth and development of Dalhart. It also prospered as the transportation center for the XIT Ranch. The city remains the business hub for the states of Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
